While
most sane people welcome the news that the NHS is to make HPV (human
papillomavirus) vaccination available to protect girls against ovarian
cancer in Scotland, there are already worries that the programme
of vaccination might encourage women not to die. It is thought that
theologians are already marshalling arguments against the programme,
arguing that there is a moral dimension that is being neglected.
Pausing
only to adjust his berretta, one attractively-costumed cleric told
The JT: "It's all very well protecting women against a life-threatening
illness but we're concerned that the vaccination might send out
the wrong message - that it's OK for human beings to have sex. "
While
canon law reluctantly sanctions the whole sordid business provided
a baby is made for Jesus, there is widespread concern among celibate
males who dress funny that the new drug will encourage sexual license
with women indulging in licentious practices without worrying about
dying as a consequence.
"As
befits a religious discourse that takes a prurient interest in other
people's sex lives, it's vitally important that sex is surrounded
by guilt, worry and fear. If God has meant as to be happy, he wouldn't
have invented religion."
