"Carry on waving": FM in firm stand against bigotry.
In what is seen as being a landmark stand against sectarianism, First Minister Jack McConnell this week sanctioned the waving of Union flags and Irish Tricolours at Old Firm games.

"I think" he told the JT, "it's important that we state quite firmly that Old Firm fans can, without fear or favour, continue to do what they’ve done for decades. We’re sending out a very clear message that the Executive are behind the waving of flags and it's OK for fans to, er, continue waving flags."

A joint spokescousininchrist for the Old Firm told the JT: "This is good news. Many supporters would have turned up at games unsure if it was OK to wave flags, thankfully Mr McConnell’s statement has put paid to any banner brandishing related uncertainty."

Elsewhere in the wonderful world of mindless tribalism, Rangers FC confirmed last night that they will be taking action against a Loyalist website selling Rangers merchandise online. Following press reports of the practice, senior managers at Ibrox are taking immediate action - in the form of a strongly worded invoice to the site’s owner to recoup outstanding royalties.

As the battle to combat sectarianism heats up, sources on either side of the divide called for "that other lot" to pack it in.

Meanwhile,Mr McConnell has called for legislation to deal with what he calls "Scotland’s secret shame". Er, right, what’s ‘secret’ about it exactly?

Inside: "The issue of course is what well-meaning liberals see as a problem, others see as an opportunity." Discuss with reference to the number of times some pished numptie has asked you what team you support.
