| In an historic move, delegates to
the recent Scottish Police Federation conference voted to endorse the right of serving
officers to strike. The ballot result signals SPF frustration at what they see as the
wrong kind of political interference in the setting of service pay and conditions. A
SPF spokestruncheon told the JT: "It's completely unacceptable that police wages be
set by the politicians."
The SPF would like to see a return to the traditional
method of setting wage levels as pioneered in the early 80s.
"Back then" the enraged plod continued, "The
Thatcher Government simply asked how much do you want to kick the shit out of striking
miners? And Thatcher paid up, no questions asked. Thats the correct way for
politicians to interfere." |
With rank and file militancy
reaching fever pitch the prospect of bizzies-related strike action now looms. Any
industrial action involving the boys in blue is, however, likely to be self-limiting, with
police on the picket line instantaneously arresting themselves and doling out the
appropriate (ahem) "restraint" by whacking each other over the head with
truncheons for being lippy. The SPF plan a series of demonstrations with
thousands of serving officers taking part - altho police estimates on the day will
automatically reduce the actual figures down to three PCs and an alsatian. |
