"Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye!": SNP supremo in emotional farewell speech.
In what proved to be his best and probably farewell speech to conference, SNP leader John Swinney signalled a change in electoral strategy when he told delegates: "Independence will not lead to a land of milk and honey, there’s no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and this isn’t Kansas, Toto."

Reversing an age old gambit of promising the moon on a stick, Mr Swinney instead argued that a future independent Scotland would be much like the present but a bit different.

Political analysts agree that the new electoral strategy will prove a complex sell on the doorstep. One spokesswingometer told the JT: "When it comes to politics your average voter has the

attention span of an amnesiac goldfish. Will the proposition that independence won’t be that great convert voters? You don’t really need me to answer that question do you?"

With the Holyrood elections looming, partyspokesfish Nicola Sturgeon told waiting media: "As John has said very clearly, this is all John’s idea and if it all goes tits up on polling day, the party will I’m sure get right behind John in ushering him to the sign marked Exit."

And with that Ms Sturgeon executed a backward flip back into her aquarium where she spent the rest of the day swimming in and out of a plastic sunken galleon.
